Adding an app icon or a shortcut to Ubuntu Unity desktop turns out to be pretty easy.
Here are the steps:
- Open the Nautilus File Manager.
- Navigate to the
/usr/share/applications. (Click on “Computer” to get to the root directory in Nautilus.)
- Click on the application icon you want to copy.
- Click on the Desktop.
The app icon you can launch from should now be on the desktop. You can drag and move it wherever you want.
In theory you should be able to do a search in the Unity app launcher and then drag the application icon to the desktop. However, apparently this is a bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1241972. Stuff like this is what makes Linux not approachable by mere mortals.
