Add App Shortcuts/Icons to Ubuntu 13.10 Unity Desktop

Adding an app icon or a shortcut to Ubuntu Unity desktop turns out to be pretty easy.

Here are the steps:

  1. Open the Nautilus File Manager.
  2. Navigate to the /usr/share/applications. (Click on “Computer” to get to the root directory in Nautilus.)
  3. Click on the application icon you want to copy.
  4. Type Cntl-c.
  5. Click on the Desktop.
  6. Type Cntl-v.

The app icon you can launch from should now be on the desktop. You can drag and move it wherever you want.

In theory you should be able to do a search in the Unity app launcher and then drag the application icon to the desktop. However, apparently this is a bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1241972. Stuff like this is what makes Linux not approachable by mere mortals.
