HTML5 and Netflix Video Standards Controversy

HTML5 Logo

This is something I have heard vaguely about before. It seems there is a lot of fighting going on over DRM in the HTML5 video spec. Netflix and other big companies are trying to add DRM capabilities to the spec and the Free Software Foundation is opposing it. Story follows:

TechHive: Advocates Call for Netflix Boycott over HTML5 Standard

Still, after reading the article there may be more technical nuance to this than I understand. However, it would seem better that the HTML5 video support has a standard option. Otherwise, DRM will happen anyway without a standard which generally results in a big mess. As an open source fan of licenses like the MIT or Apache, I will not be boycotting Netflix.
