No more Remote Workers at Yahoo

Yahoo announced earlier this week that they would no longer allow remote workers at their company. Folks have until June to make arrangement to make it into the office. After that, I assume you are either at a desk or working someplace else.

As you might imagine, this has caused quite a fire storm in the tech community. DHH at 37Signals chimed in along with Derek Thompson at the Atlantic. Both of them think this move is a bad idea and I have to agree with them. The advantages of remote work far outweigh the costs.

Here are just a few advantages of remote work:
  • Talent is global. It is not located in one city or one country. Requiring everyone in one location really limits your options.
  • Office space is expensive. Trying to stick with a factory model in the information age is both costly and not very smart.
  • Commuting is a big waste of time and it also harms the environment.
  • Work flexibility is a competitive advantage. All things being equal, tech workers are going to flock to the employers that give them the most flexibility.

My guess is that in 20 years, a lot more companies will look like 37signals than will look like Yahoo. Just my $0.02. :)
